Drought Committee Prepares For Multi-Hazard Year | TVJ News

Jamaica is bracing for what officials are calling a challenging “multi-hazard” year, as the Drought Management Committee steps up national preparedness.
At a meeting Tuesday, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water, Environment and Climate Change, Wayne Robertson, warned that increasing climate variability requires stronger coordination to protect lives and livelihoods.
Meteorological experts say the island could face alternating periods of heavy rainfall and severe dryness, raising the risk of flash flooding, drought, bush fires and heat stress—all within the same season.
The National Water Commission reports that 27 systems are already affected, impacting more than 24,000 customers, particularly in St. Catherine, Clarendon and the north-east.
