In celebration of the upcoming Roman Catholic feast of Corpus Christi, Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen noted that in Trinidad and Tobago, many people associate the holiday with planting various food crops.
At the Ministry’s headquarters in Port of Spain, Minister Ameen distributed seedlings donated by the Ministry of Agriculture to members of staff.
She encouraged them to share the annual activity with their children.
« It would be good for you to take these into your homes, but I want to ask you one favour. If you have children, get them involved. We went to the schools, and our children were very excited about the plants, but some of them don’t know how to take care of plants and I recognise that not everybody would have a space in their backyard to plant. »
The Minister encouraged those who did not have backyards to also plant the seedlings.
« Even if I want you have to put these in a flowerpot at home, I want you to start doing your own little thing. Seasoning, hot pepper, chadon beni, chive. When you’re cooking, you have it there in the kitchen, even if it is in a flowerpot because planting and feeding ourselves is an important part of our national development. »
Hot peppers, corn, bhagi, tomatoes, pumpkin and ochroes were just some of the seedlings distributed.
