An autopsy on the body of 12-year-old Mercedes Layne has indicated that she died as a result of blunt force injuries to her body.

This latest information forms part of police investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death.

According to reports, the young girl’s body was found by a maintenance worker checking on an active oil well on Sunday, following a missing persons report filed by the child’s mother and grandfather on Saturday.

The child was reportedly placed in a vehicle by her grandfather at his home in Rancho Quemado for transport to her residence in Los Iros, but did not arrive at her destination.

Hunters Search and Rescue Team leader Captain Vallence Rambarath stated that his team played an active role in the search efforts.

« Word came from the police that they had identified a particular vehicle, and that information was transmitted to the team so that assisted while they looked at CCTV footage to try to follow the vehicle’s movements. So the search ended at 2am, and the team returned to Erin at about 7am on Sunday morning to continue the search. »

Police have detained a 26-year-old Palo Seco man in connection with the death of Mercedes.

Mr Rambarath stated that the nation needs to revisit its core principles to ensure the protection of its children.
