SAINT LUCIA ELDER ABUSE POLICY REFORMS
Saint Lucia is moving from talk to action when it comes to protecting its senior citizens.
Monday June 15th marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
To commemorate the occasion, the Minister for Older Persons, Emma Hippolyte, issued a stern call to the nation, labeling elder abuse as one of the country’s most pressing human rights challenges.
This year’s United Nations’ theme is « Beyond Awareness, Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work. »
Minister Hippolyte explicitly states that simply recognizing the problem is no longer enough.
The Department of Equity is now pushing a new national policy to the Cabinet of Ministers to create legal consequences for those who mistreat the elderly.
