Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has paid tribute to cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers, describing him as one of the Caribbean’s greatest sons and a symbol of regional excellence whose impact extended far beyond sport.

The Prime Minister issued the statement following news of the Barbadian icon’s passing.

Expressing condolences to his family, Barbados and the West Indies cricket fraternity, Mrs. Persad-Bissessar said Sir Gary emerged at a pivotal time in the Caribbean’s history, inspiring confidence as newly independent nations established their place on the world stage.

She said long before the region enjoyed significant international influence, Sir Gary Sobers ensured that the name West Indies commanded admiration and global respect through his extraordinary achievements on the cricket field.

The Prime Minister compared his influence in cricket to that of Pelé in football and Muhammad Ali in boxing, saying his name became synonymous with excellence.

While praising his unmatched sporting accomplishments, Mrs Persad-Bissessar said Sir Gary Sobers’ greatest legacy was showing generations of Caribbean people that world-class greatness could emerge from small island nations.

She added that his legacy belongs not only to Barbados or cricket, but to the entire Caribbean.

The Prime Minister said Sir Garfield Sobers’ life was a testament to discipline, integrity and perseverance, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations across the Caribbean and the world.
