We here at TTT Limited are celebrating a strong showing at the Caribbean Broadcasting Union’s Annual Awards, having earned two awards and two special mentions for our work across culture and storytelling.
The awards came in Best Magazine Programme for Penny on Point (POP) Christmas Special and Excellence in Media Coverage of Caribbean Arts and Culture – Digital for Right Here with Khary Roberts – Rope Jab.
The recognition highlights TTT’s commitment to producing compelling stories that shine a spotlight on Trinidad and Tobago’s talent and culture while contributing to the country’s impressive overall performance at the awards.
Right Here with Khary Roberts continues to showcase the beauty, culture and hidden gems of Trinidad and Tobago through what can be described as virtual island tours.
The programme’s focus on local experiences and storytelling has now earned Mr Roberts recognition for his work, an honour he says is especially meaningful because of his passion for writing, culture and Trinidad and Tobago’s unique history and environment.
« I am very humbled. I did not have any expectations really, but I had hope, and I am really happy to see that the hard work has paid off. Because I enjoy writing, I enjoy doing it Right Here itself; it’s one of my favourite things to do in my job, and to see that I am being honoured for it, awarded for it, is something that is very close to my heart. »
Receiving this recognition, ‘Rope Jab’, tells a cultural story grounded in tradition with deep historical roots.
« I went to Couva, to where the Jab King is and where they practise and hone their craft before they go out into the road for Carnival, and you know, all that time. And I got to chat with Mr Alfred, and Mr Alfred was a knowledge base of everything to do with the rope jab and the history of it in Trinidad and Tobago. And he had such rich information, and I didn’t want to lose any of that. So, I was happy to be able to bring out the information and the story he shared of the craft and the love for their craft and what they put into it in a way that honours the story. »
He hopes the recognition will help take Right Here beyond Trinidad and Tobago, allowing him to explore and showcase destinations and experiences across the Caribbean.
« I would love to be able to do, well, more Right Here in Trinidad and, more so, Tobago and then hopefully go up the islands, because I feel like there’s so much in our beautiful Caribbean to see, so much to experience, and I’ll be happy to be the one to be able to tell the stories of what to see, where to go, who to chat with, and who to link with to experience this beautiful Caribbean that we have. »
TTT also earned Special Mentions for Woman Power Wednesday: Teniel Campbell – Episode 19 in the Best Sports Story category and Woman Power Wednesday: Penelope Spencer – Episode 23 for Excellence in Media Coverage of Caribbean Arts and Culture – Television.
