Lord Nelson Honoured At Tobago Diaspora Day In New York
Veteran calypsonian Lord Nelson was presented with a Tobago Diaspora Award at the annual Tobago Diaspora Day celebrations in Brooklyn, New York, on Sunday.
The 95-year-old artist, who was born in Plymouth, Tobago, continues to perform at the event, much to the delight of Trinbagonians in attendance in New York.
He was presented the award by Chief Secretary Farley Augustine. Along with the award, Mr Augustine announced that the THA is embarking on two projects to honour Lord Nelson while he is still alive.
« In one part it will result in you being able to successfully be repatriated to Tobago, meaning come back home and live, and the second part of it is the establishment of a living museum in your name and honour. »
The Chief Secretary also thanked the Tobago diaspora for their continued support of the island by supporting events such as the Tobago Carnival.
« We launched a Tobago Carnival product in 2022, and because of your efforts, we were able to grow that product. Last year we got about 40,000 visitors to the island for that product, and we expect to grow even more this year. »
He also encouraged the diaspora to attend the Tobago Heritage Festival in 2027 for homecoming celebrations.
Present at the Tobago Diaspora Day event were several entrepreneurs who, through the support of the THA, were able to market their products to the attendees. Several cultural acts from Tobago were also present, along with the island’s traditional food, giving attendees a taste of home.
Tobago Diaspora Day has been in existence for eleven years and is hosted by the Brooklyn-based group, the Tobago Empowerment and Alliance Mission.
