Port Of Spain Gets Major Clean-Up After Independence Day, CPL Activities
In the wake of Monday’s Independence Day activities and the excitement of the Caribbean Premier League match at the Queen’s Park Oval, the City of Port of Spain received a much-needed clean-up from crews from the National Programme for the Upkeep of Public Spaces (NPUPS) early on Tuesday morning.
Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen said the crews focused their attention on several venues.
« We were essentially targeting in the area that had concentrated celebrations. So we’re talking about the Queen’s Park Savannah that had the Independence cultural show, the Queen’s Park Oval because they had CPL cricket and some of those major thoroughfares like the Avenue, Ariapita Avenue, the Western Main Road, Tragarete Road. And the idea was to remove all, any garbage from the road. »
Minister Ameen described the Independence Day celebrations as refreshing, noting that everything came together beautifully. She credited Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for the event’s success.
« I think I have to commend Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s leadership and her coordination with the Minister of Defence, Wayne Sturge; Minister of Homeland Security, Mr Roger Alexander; Minister of Culture. The thing is, while they were responsible for the major components such as the military parade and the cultural show, there are several of us who played a role in terms of a supporting role. So you had the Ministry of Works doing repairs on the roadway within the city. You had us in Local Government doing clean-up. You had Ministry of Agriculture. So there were several elements. »
Minister Ameen said the clean-up crews were out as early as 2am to begin their efforts to ensure that the city was ready for the start of a new work week on Tuesday.
