Carry Wi Story, Lest We Forget a Service of Remembrance, Justice, and Repair || September 6, 2026
This event holds significant cultural and political importance as it marks the anniversary of the 1781 departure of the British slave ship Zong departed from Accra, Ghana, on August 18, 1781, carrying 442 enslaved Africans. The Zong arrived at Black River, Jamaica, on December 22, 1781. Only 208 enslaved people were still alive on the ship.
The service aims to gather in person and online, a Jamaican delegation to deliver a formal petition for slavery reparations to His Majesty King Charles III. Jamaica’s Minister of Culture Olivia “Babsy” Grange will be in attendance.
The event’s purpose is to promote awareness, remembrance, and advocacy for justice and reparative measures related to Jamaica’s history of slavery.
