St James Infirmary Faces Capacity Issues As Social Cases Rise | Midday News
The St. James Municipal Corporation is awaiting final approval to expand the St. James Infirmary as authorities seek to address the growing number of social cases occupying hospital beds in western Jamaica.
Chairman Richard Vernon says the proposed expansion would accommodate an additional 58 residents, including persons to be relocated from the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
The infirmary is currently at capacity, with 80 admission requests pending. Vernon is also urging families who are able to care for their relatives to take greater responsibility, as authorities work to increase accommodation for vulnerable and abandoned persons.
