Judiciary To Livestream Important Court Matters
The Judiciary is set to take another major step toward greater transparency, with plans to livestream important court matters and give the public easier access to judgements.
Speaking at the Commemorative Opening of the 2026/2027 Law Term, Chief Justice Ronnie Boodoosingh said improving accessibility is a key priority for the Judiciary, and that means making court processes and decisions easier for citizens to understand and access.
« This term, we will begin live streaming of important cases, starting with the Court of Appeal. This will allow ordinary citizens to view how the highest courts within Trinidad and Tobago carries out part of its work in the same way it sees the work of the Privy Council and the Caribbean Court of Justice. »
The Chief Justice said the Judiciary has already begun introducing measures to improve public access to court decisions.
« In the past year, we have begun to give online notification of new judgements. Our judgements have been long published online. We also have started to issue plain language summaries of important court judgements for the information of the public. This has been a significant development as it provides for the media a useful summary to report accurately on cases. »
Justice Boodoosingh also pointed to the Judiciary’s growing public engagement efforts through social media and regular public information updates.
« You may also have noticed that our social media pages have become very active thanks to the public education and information strategies of the Court Communications Unit. Almost on a weekly basis, we issue information about what is occurring within the Judiciary. »
In a further effort to bring justice closer to communities, the Chief Justice revealed that the Judiciary is examining a new initiative aimed at serving people in remote areas.
« We are looking at innovative ways to deliver justice. In the next year, we hope, and I’m choosing my words carefully, to advance proposals for a pilot programme to provide a mobile court service for outlying areas, but more on this will follow. »
