From Rally Driver to Dementia Patient: A Mother Tells Her Son Hugh’s Story | Remembering Tomorrow
2 hours ago
Hugh was an intelligent, talented and accomplished man. A graduate in electronic engineering, he could build computers from scratch, solve electronic problems in minutes, and was once one of Jamaica’s best motorcar rally drivers.
But after suddenly losing his job, his life began to change.
His mother recounts the difficult years that followed. From the breakdown of his marriage and his declining mental health to the devastating realisation that her son was suffering from severe depression and progressing into dementia.
She became his guardian, navigating an unfamiliar medical system while trying to understand what was happening to the son she had always known.
Then came one of the most painful moments of her journey: finding Hugh in a hospital, severely distressed and almost unrecognisable to her. But when she embraced him and reminded him, “This is Mommy. I’m still here,” something changed.
Today, she visits him twice a day at his nursing home, caring for him in every way she can.
This is Hugh’s story and a mother’s story of love, sacrifice and unwavering commitment.
