Smoke Triggers Maternity Unit Evacuation At Port Of Spain General Hospital
The Maternity Unit at the Port of Spain General Hospital was evacuated on Wednesday after an air-conditioning component burned out, generating smoke and triggering the building’s fire alarm.
The North West Regional Health Authority says no babies were transferred to another institution, contrary to reports circulating about the incident.
It says babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) were safely evacuated, along with staff, and remained at the hospital throughout the incident.
The Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service responded within about 10 minutes and assessed the building, clearing it for re-occupancy approximately one hour later.
The babies were then returned to the NICU, where they continue to be monitored by clinical staff.
