UNDP Marks International Day of Peace With Doubles For Protective Services
Members of the Protective Services were treated to doubles, one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most beloved culinary delicacies, as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) marked International Day of Peace on Monday.
This year, the United Nations theme is calling on people to “Invest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.”
Attorney Om Lalla said International Day of Peace provides an opportunity to recognise and thank those who work to promote peace and protect communities.
« Today is an exciting day as we celebrate World Peace Day, bringing together all the service providers who promote peace in the country. I think it’s so important to express gratitude and pay tribute to these people who play such an important role in our country, and what better day than World Peace Day. »
Speaking on crime in T&T, UNDP Resident Representative Ugo Blanco noted that crime remains a major challenge and that addressing it is critical to ensuring future generations can grow up in a safe and peaceful environment.
« Crime is a big issue in Trinidad and Tobago. I always say that this country without the crime would be the paradise on earth. We have to work about that, it’s been like four decades of crime, it can change. This country has the capacity and the potential to change it, so for new generations to grow in a safe and peaceful environment. »
Attorney Prakash Ramadhar noted that the gesture goes beyond providing a meal, saying that peace and development are interconnected.
« Without peace there’s no development; without development there’s no peace. But peace begins in the heart and soul of each human being. An initiative today, I was telling Mr Lalla, is far beyond doubles. It’s far, far more than that. It’s a sense of people who care, reaching out for those who may not be seen, or not heard, and a sense of acknowledgement for each individual here and Trinidad and Tobago, we need to embrace all of us. »
The United Nations observes International Day of Peace annually on September 21st, promoting peace and encouraging efforts to build safer and more peaceful communities.
