National Security Minister Myles Laroda responded to allegations of neglect by the family of Thomas Jean-Baptiste. Jean-Baptiste was an inmate who died in custody on October 4, less than three months after returning to prison.

Laroda says Jean-Baptiste was referred to Princess Margaret Hospital twice as his condition worsened. He also says the inmate was housed in a dormitory outside the prison infirmary, rather than a cell, and had access to medication. His family has raised concerns about the treatment he received before his death.

According to Laroda, prison officials are confident Jean-Baptiste received adequate care while in custody.
