Chief Justice Marks First Year With Focus On Judicial Reform

Strengthening the Judiciary and improving the administration of justice remain key priorities for Chief Justice Ronnie Boodoosingh as he marks his first year in office.
He highlighted the responsibility of leading the Judiciary and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the administration of justice.
“It’s a trust that has been put on my shoulders for a period of time, as it was for the eight Chief Justices we had before since Independence. But I see this as an opportunity to make a difference as a leader. I’ve been put into a leadership role, and I embrace it entirely. It is something that I do not take lightly with the office and the obligations with it.”
Of the many responsibilities and challenges facing the Judiciary, the Chief Justice said lengthy delays in resolving cases remain among his greatest concerns.
“What worries me the most, I think, is a long time for cases to be disposed of. I think that is an issue that we have to work about, work at in each division. No victim of a crime, no accused of a crime should have to wait 10 and 15, 20 years for a case to be determined. We have to work at those things. No child should have to wait years for an issue of custody or maintenance to be dealt with.”
