Trinidad and Tobago and the European Union have identified security, trade, investment and digital transformation as key priorities for deeper cooperation during their first Partnership Dialogue under the Samoa Agreement.
Speaking at Friday’s Partnership Dialogue between Trinidad and Tobago and the European Union, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Sean Sobers said strong international partnerships are essential as countries navigate an increasingly complex global environment.
« As geopolitical and economic developments continue to reshape the global landscape, no one country can effectively address every challenge in isolation. »
Minister Sobers described the meeting as a significant step in deepening cooperation and strengthening relations between the two partners.
The dialogue marked the first formal engagement between Trinidad and Tobago and the European Union since the country’s accession to the Samoa Agreement in July 2024.
« Strong partnerships and sustained dialogue are therefore essential to navigating uncertainty, building resilience, and identifying opportunities for meaningful cooperation. »
The discussion comes as Trinidad and Tobago prepares to take up its seat on the United Nations Security Council in January.
Minister Sobers said the position will provide an important platform for the country to contribute to efforts addressing regional and global challenges.
« In this vein, Trinidad and Tobago is of the view that engagement with the European Union can indeed complement our efforts by creating opportunities for practical cooperation in areas such as sustainable development, economic growth, peace and security. »
Director for the Americas at the European External Action Service, Pelayo Castro, highlighted the Economic Partnership Agreement as a key avenue for boosting trade and investment.
« On trade and investment, dear Minister, the EU Cari-Forum Economic Partnership, our EPA offers, in our perspective, opportunities to grow trade even more. And that requires the full implementation of the EPA. »
He also noted that the European Union is seeking closer collaboration with Trinidad and Tobago in areas such as cybersecurity and climate action while strengthening cooperation on major international issues, including Haiti, Ukraine and regional security.
