After a year of Israeli strikes on Gaza, the strip faces a massive challenge of how to clear over 42 million tonnes of rubble. The United Nations estimates that clearing the debris could cost $1.2 billion, with dangers including unexploded bombs, decaying bodies, and hazardous materials such as asbestos. There are also concerns about long-term health risks from toxic materials as well dust pollution. The rubble, about 8 times the weight of the Great Pyramid of Giza, has damaged or destroyed two-thirds of Gaza’s buildings. The UN has begun small efforts in places like Khan Younis, but the task remains immense. Recycling the debris is part of the solution, but space and equipment shortages, as well as Israeli restrictions, complicate the process. On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a deadly cross-border attack in Israel, killing over 1,200 people and capturing 251 hostages. A year later, 97 hostages remain in Hamas captivity, with 33 believed dead. Israel’s retaliatory military campaign has killed more than 41,000 people in Gaza, most of them civilians. Gaza is now a humanitarian disaster. Two-thirds of its buildings are damaged or destroyed, and almost 1.9 million people, or 90% of the population, are displaced. Critical infrastructure, including hospitals and schools are in ruins, with widespread shortages of food, medicine, and water. The conflict has also spread regionally to Lebanon, where Hezbollah has intensified attacks. Israeli airstrikes have killed over 1,000 people in Lebanon since September, and fighting threatens to further escalate after Iran fired 200 missiles into Israel on Oct. 1. Violence has also flared up in the West Bank, where over 700 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023. Diplomatic efforts continue as United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for peace. “It is time for the release of the hostages. Time to silence the guns. Time to stop the suffering that has engulfed the region," he said. U.S. President Joe Biden has called for a ceasefire, but has also continued military support to Israel, including an $8.7 billion aid package.
