The Gros Islet Public Library has reopened after being closed for three years. An official ceremony was held on the grounds of the refurbished facility on Friday, May 24th. The reopening comes as the island observes Reading Month which aims to inspire a love for reading in children and adults alike, highlighting the benefits of literacy and storytelling!

The recent videos circulating which showcases youth in violence from the 6&7 gangs has caught the attention of Minister for youth & sports Kenson Casimir in addition to the minister for education. The recent spike in criminal activity amongst students & the increased presence of gang violence is a concern to public safety & the safety of students attending the same schools as the gang members. The Ministers are encouraging all sectors of society to join forces in fighting crime, since it is not a simple matter.

The heatwave affecting the island and which is expected to last well into September of this year has prompted the Ministry of Health to issue a heat advisory for Schools. Parents, teachers, guardians and students are being advised to take the necessary precautions and to be vigilant of signs of heat related illnesses.

The Saint Lucia Teachers Union will be hosting a branch meeting on Thursday 6th June, 2024. The purpose of the meeting is to get feedback from members on the Draft Revised Education Bill in order for the Union to present its suggestions and objections to the crafters of the document. This as the union points to what it calls “several grey areas” in the draft bill.

In response to objections about the recommended minimum wage, Chair of the Minimum Wage & Equal Wages Commission, Lawrence Poyotte, says that the $6.50 per hour- figure was not taken out of thin air. He made the comment at a stakeholder consultation on the draft order of the proposed minimum wage which was held on Wednesday, at the Finance Administrative Center.

Twenty (20) schools from across Saint Lucia will compete in this year’s National Schools Calypso Competition scheduled for Friday, June 7, 2024, at the SAAB, Vigie, Castries. The Competition will be divided into two segments: infant/primary schools and secondary schools. The participating Schools are as follows.

The island’s homicide toll now stands at thirty-three following a chopping at Talvan, Babonneau. Officers at the Babonneau Police Station were alerted to the incident at about 5:45 a.m The body of an unresponsive male victim was discovered with an apparent laceration to the head. Upon further examination, officers noted that the victim’s left leg had been severed. The victim was later pronounced dead on the scene by a medical practitioner. The deceased has been identified as Abraham Charles Rose a sixty- three (63) year-old resident of Talvern, Babonneau.

The Carnival Music Management Committee has begun preparations for the staging of the 2024 edition of the National Groovy and Power Soca Competition. Artistes have until the end of this month to apply to participate in the competition and are required to complete an electronic form, uploading an image of themselves, as well as the intended competition song and backup track in WAV or MP3 format.

The National Association of Driving Schools is threatening drastic action if the Infrastructure Ministry does not address its concerns about the cessation of the oral driving examinations. Vice President Kingson Jean has called the Infrastructure Ministry disrespectful for ignoring the organization’s requests to meet to discuss instructors concerns and devise solutions.
