The island`s Minister for Labour says that government will have to face the inescapable challenge of establishing a Living Wage for some workers whose salaries cannot finance their basic needs. A recently established Minimum Wage Commission recently charged with formulating recommendations to address the issue , has presented its suggestions to the Cabinet of Ministers. The first fatal police shooting for the year has occurred in Vieux Fort. A teenager from Castries succumbed after being shot by officers attached to the Vieux Fort Police Station on Tuesday morning. Sections of the St Lucian society have responded to last week`s revelation by the Office of the Prime Minister regarding the unemployment rate on the island. According to a press release from the OPM , the unemployment rate for 2023 was 14% , while the figure for the previous year was 16.5%.The rate of unemployment in 2021 was 9%. The decline is being attributed to a number of major projects , including the Sandals La Toc expansion and upgrade ,the construction of Cabot Residences and the Cas-En-Bas Beach Resort.
