Shellana David dreams of one day becoming a nurse and working with children, and the 16-year-old Coleridge and Parry student is putting her all into achieving that goal. The ambition is driven by her own experience from childhood, amidst the fear of yet another return of the cancer which threatened her life and from which she has twice been declared free. Last Monday, the first cohort of Barbadians were sworn in as Justices of the Peace. That group included 25 people out of the scheduled 100 for the day and featured retired permanent secretaries, business people, attorneys, reverends, community practitioners and more. The ceremony was repeated all week as there were almost 350 people scheduled to take the oath and affirmations. Fifty two year old man Anderson Lovell was confirmed dead at the scene of a road fatality yesterday evening which happened along Sargeants Village main road in Christ Church. The Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) is throwing its support behind BICO employees who are off the job on Wednesday. BWU negotiator Alexandria Thomas said the work stoppage was “in response to several issues which have been happening throughout the last couple of years”. She listed environmental concerns, health and safety issues and a breakdown in wage negotiations which have been taking place for some time. (Video by Reco Moore)
On Tuesday October 15, classes were halted at Eden Lodge Primary School after environmental issues in the form of a pungent odour caused teaching at the school to stop on Tuesday. Barbados thrashed the Bahamas 6-2 at the Wildey Turf tonight to secure their fourth straight competitive win. That win came courtesy of braces by captain Andre Applewhaite and midfielder Sheran Hoyte while Niall Reid Stephen and Omani Leacock also scored. For Bahamas, striker Brandon Adderley and an own goal from Nicole Brathwaite were the scorers. This win was Barbados’ largest margin of victory since a 7-1 win over Anguilla in 2006. Barbados Head Coach Kent Hall and forward Khalil Vanderpool-Nurse spoke to the media prior to their CONCACAF Nations League C match against the Bahamas at the Wildey Turf on October 15. President of the Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club Roland Butcher spoke about the social benefits that he hopes will come out of this morning’s kit distribution thanks to DP World, an official sponsor of this year’s Men’s T20 World Cup. For every 100 runs scored by a team in this summer’s World Cup, 10 cricket kits were donated by DP World. A legacy benefit of this year’s Men’s T20 World Cup was the philanthropic work done by its official sponsor DP World for the joint hosts: the West Indies & the USA with 10 cricket kits donated for every team that scored 100 runs during a World Cup match. As such, there were 23 recipients (primary schools & cricket academy) of cricket gear earlier this morning in a move aimed at fostering young cricketing talent on the island. After Jakobi Grannum was shot and killed in a police-involved shooting, some residents of Odessa McClean Drive, My Lord’s Hill, St Michael questioned the actions of lawmen on Friday night. Enveloped in anger and sorrow, some of the neighbours, friends and families of the 22-year-old deceased shopkeeper were not happy with the way police converged on the area while conducting a search warrant of a shop. There has been a decline in fire reports across the island but the Barbados Fire Service will be doing its best to increase its staff and hand out more promotions according to Chief Fire Officer Errol Maynard. Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams lauded the officers at the service for their hard work and sacrifice which has kept Barbadians safe from danger. Some Bay Garden stall operators have been told by the Ministry of Health that the closure of their stalls may go beyond tomorrow. An unidentified health inspector overseeing the work said the popular Bay Gardens in Oistins, Christ Church, was closed for the last few days for maintenance, however the length of closure may be affected by the absence of some stall owners.
