The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) is looking to bolster its services with the acquisition of more than 440 pieces of medical equipment. The Accident & Emergency Department is set to benefit from the devices, which include a CT scanner and an X-ray machine to facilitate faster treatments there. Commissioner of Police Richard Boyce confirmed in his press conference that the controversial death of homeless man Albert John was by natural causes despite his injuries. The 62 year old, who police said, was from Kensington New Road, The City, who died on November 3rd. It was the same day he presented himself at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with injuries. Since then his death was the subject of public debate after reports emerged that he had been beaten by a group in King Street, also in the City. (Video by Reco Moore)
Concessionaire Andrew Franklyn spoke to the media last Wednesday about his contribution in implementing the School Nutritional Policy. He was awarded a voucher for his efforts. As part of the regulation carbonated drinks, beverages with artificial sweeteners, and noncompliant snacks and drinks will be banned from the menus of schools. This regulation forms part of the 2024-2025 implementation of the School Nutritional Policy, as the Ministry of Education Technological and Vocational Training (METVT) continues its plan for a healthier environment at educational institutions. After six hours of intense competition, ten-year-old Amayah Chase of West Terrace Primary School emerged victorious at the fifth Insurance Corporation of Barbados Ltd Junior National Spelling Bee 2024. The nail-biting competition, which proved to be the longest in the event's five-year history, concluded when Chase correctly spelt "truculent" to secure the top spot. The young champion appeared stunned by her achievement, though her joy was evident as she accepted the trophy. (Video by Shanice King)
One minute Andrea Bailey was sitting in a packed barber salon and the next she was staring through the glass door at a gun pointed in her direction. The 47-year-old woman was one of the victims shot on November 2, while at the King of Fades barber shop, in the annex of Sheraton Mall, Christ Church. Her left foot is in a cast with fragments of the bullet still lodged in the calf and while there may be a long road to recovery since the bullet shattered the bone, Bailey is confident that she will recover, she told the Weekend Nation from her home earlier this week. After seven days in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Bailey recalled the horrifying incident which ended the exciting vacation plans she and her boyfriend had started to enjoy. Today, it’s a fulcrum of China’s Belt and Road Initiative and window of opening up to the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. It was established by the Central Government in 1988 making it China’s youngest province, its biggest special economic zone and the only tropical island province in the country. It is now transforming itself into the world’s largest free trade port. As Barbados prepares for the upcoming winter tourism season, the island is increasing its airlift from the United States. Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), Craig Hinds, highlighted this development while welcoming the return of American Airlines flight 585, which arrived directly from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York last Tuesday.
