Esteemed Barbados and West Indies’ fast bowler Sir Charles Griffith once again make his presence felt at the world-famous Kensington Oval. Sir Charles, 85, who formed one of the world’s most devastating fast-bowling pairs, with Sir Wes Hall in the 1960s, joined his pace partner and life-long friend Sir Wesley Hall and National Hero, The Right Excellent Sir Gafield Sobers at “The Mecca” when his statue was unveiled at the historic venue on Monday. In the midst of all the hard work, there were some light moments when we visited the Portvale Sugar Factory on Saturday. While it was quiet in the yard, there was a lot happening inside the factory as workers prepared for Monday’s start to the 2024 sugar harvest. Fire officers attached to the station of the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) temporarily walked off the job Wednesday morning, as they called for a resolution to issues with security at the airport fire station. For close to two hours the workers were locked in discussions with personnel from the Grantley Adams International Airport and the Chief Fire Officer, Errol Maynard following the early morning demonstration. At the conclusion of the talks, chairman of the Barbados Fire Service Association, Corrie Bridgeman, informed the media that the morning protest was the result of several calls from staff regarding ongoing issues relative to security. The moment where Barbados’ finest triathlete Matthew Wright essentially qualified for the Paris Olympic Games this summer. Wright finished second overall at the 2024 Americas Triathlon Cup in the Elite Men’s category to America’s Reese Vannerson. Wright’s final time was 55.58 minutes. Remy Rock and Jerry Husbands were remanded to Dodds Prison after appearing before Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes on Tuesday morning. Rock of Small Land, Bridge Gap, Black Rock, St Michael; and Husbands of 1st Avenue Goddings Road, Station Hill, St Michael, were jointly charged with rape of a minor. The brand new red and white Regupol track named after Barbados’ distinguished 110m hurdler Ryan Brathwaite was officially declared open this morning at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex. During the opening ceremony, held just before 10 a.m., Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Campus, Professor Clive Landis, led a group of officials to cut the ribbon at the finish line. Among those was the Head of UWI Academy of Sports, Dr Rudolph Alleyne; Co-Chair of the Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championship, Sonja Goodridge; Assistant Meet Director, Andrew Brathwaite and General Manager at Infinity on the Beach Hotel, Rene Coppin. At least 33 per cent of the country’s unemployed citizens are people with disabilities, and 2 000, of the 6 000 citizens in the Welfare Department’s National Assistance of Welfare programme are classified as people with disabilities. This is according to director of the National Disabilities Unit (NDU), John Hollingsworth, who attributed much of this as a cause of employer’s attitudes towards the capabilities of disabled people. Digicel has started to remove the cell tower at Olive Lodge Road, Holders Hill, St James. Yesterday a group of residents stood by the roadside and eagerly watched as the cabinet which housed the electrical fittings was carried away by workmen. On Monday, the electrical wires were also disconnected and removed. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley officially opened Barbados’ newest tourism attraction yesterday. The Haymans Market, converted from the former Haymans Sugar Factory in St Peter, is now an entertainment centre, vendors’ market and tourism accommodation. Mottley said it was the kind of tourism feature more of which Barbados needs. She said since the island was small, it was important to make maximum use of the land areas. The Prime Minister also commended chairman of the Sun Group, Bernie Weatherhead, for using capital to invest in the venture and also for providing a facility that gives opportunities to small Barbadian business people. German visitor Stefrnea (Stefaine) Koppan who has been coming to Barbados for more than 40 years says her peace and tranquility have been shattered by a container food business. Koeppan, who is now 80 years old has a rental home at Oistins, Christ Church, which she has been utilising for over 20 years, spending four months annually on vacation. However, for the past two years her vacation has been spoiled by noise and what she calls an unbearable stench.
