Der Mann, der die Korruption im Fußball bekämpfen will und dabei die FIFA zu seinem Hofstaat macht. Angetreten, die FIFA zu reformieren und den Fußball global zu machen, baut Infantino als FIFA-Chef lieber seine Macht aus. Global ist für ihn genau genommen nur Saudi-Arabien. Ist er ein geldgieriger Fußball-Autokrat, der alle nach seinen Regeln spielen lässt? Anfang Oktober 2023 verkündet der FIFA-Präsident Gianni Infantino die WM 2023 auf drei Kontinenten: Südamerika, Europa und Afrika. Überhaupt fliegt der Fußball unter Infantinos FIFA immer schneller und höher. Nicht wenige vermuten hinter alldem einen Masterplan, ausgeheckt zusammen mit seinem guten Bekannten: Mohammed bin Salman, Kronprinz von Saudi-Arabien. Infantino, 1970 als Sohn italienischer Gastarbeiter in der Schweiz geboren, kämpft sich mit Hilfe des Fußballs nach oben. Als Kind gilt er noch als Außenseiter. Doch dann wird er erst Funktionär, danach bei der UEFA-Generalsekretär und anschließend die rechte Hand von Präsident Michel Platini. Nach außen präsentiert sich Infantino als Saubermann, doch intern fürchten ihn seine Mitarbeitenden wegen seines energischen Führungsstils. Dabei hat er ein untrügliches Gespür für die richtigen Connections und vor allem Timing. Nach dem Korruptionsskandal im Fußball 2015 ergreift er seine Chance, FIFA-Präsident zu werden. Die Wahl gewinnt er überraschend, allem Anschein nach, wegen seines Versprechens, den Fußball wirklich global zu machen und gleich viel Geld an jedes FIFA-Mitgliedsland zu verteilen. Es wird eine wichtige Stütze seiner Macht - denn so sichert er sich die Stimmen der kleinen Staaten. Kontrollinstanzen innerhalb der FIFA entmachtet er. Kritik wächst vor allem in Europa, gerade zur Fußball-WM in Katar 2022. Die Gründe: Sportswashing, fehlende Menschenrechte und Ausbeutung von Arbeitsmigranten auf Stadion-Baustellen. In einer denkwürdigen Pressekonferenz weist er die Kritik als scheinheilig zurück, seine Worte sorgen weltweit für Aufsehen: „Heute fühle ich mich katarisch". Von Europa wendet sich Infantino dabei immer weiter ab. Seine Liebe gilt der arabischen Welt, wo auch das Geld lockt. Ende Oktober 2023 verkündet er lange vor der offiziellen Abstimmung der FIFA: die übernächste WM findet in Saudi-Arabien statt. Und so geht es weniger um Fußball als vielmehr um Einfluss und Macht im Milliardenbusiness. Ist Infantino der Retter des globalen Fußballs oder doch eher ein geldgieriger Autokrat, der alle nach seinen Regeln spielen lässt? Allein für seine Kühlhäuser rechnet er 2023 mit doppelt so hohen Stromkosten wie noch im Jahr zuvor. Claus Trilling, Inhaber eines Autohauses, bezeichnet seine wirtschaftliche Lage sogar als "dramatisch". Denn in wirtschaftlich schwierigen Zeiten kaufen die Verbraucher nur sehr zögerlich einen Neuwagen. They discuss the importance of immigrants in growing Michigan's economy and population, and Dr. Jackson points to the known contributions of immigrants to the region. In addition, the two talk about Dr. Jackson's participation in the Jobs, Talent & People Work Group that conducted research and made recommendations to Governor Whitmer's Growing Michigan Together Council about how to solve the state's workforce shortage, retain and attract talent, and increase the quality of life in the state.
