En novembre 2023, un féminicide a complètement secoué l’Italie. Celui de Giulia Cecchettin. Cette étudiante de 22 ans est morte sous les coups de son ex-petit ami. Minute de bruit dans les universités et les lycées, manifestations,... L’émotion de la population était si importante que le Sénat a voté dans l’urgence un projet de loi visant à renforcer les mesures de protection des femmes. En Belgique, une loi de ce type existe déjà. Il s’agit de la loi #Stopféminicide. Son but : prévenir les féminicides et protéger les victimes de violences de genre. Le texte novateur définit le féminicide et y reconnaît quatre dimensions. Il impose aussi d’obtenir des chiffres officiels et prévoit la mise en place d’un comité d’experts. Un texte hautement symbolique qui, pour certains, pourrait aller encore plus loin et inscrire le féminicide dans le Code pénal belge. Liberal Senator Alex Antic says the Voice was Australia’s “Brexit moment”. The Indigenous Voice was emphatically rejected in October by a majority of voters in every state and territory except the Australian Capital Territory. “It would be hard to go past the Voice, I think, for the best in the sense that it was the moment I think … mainstream Australia realised that it wasn’t alone,” Mr Antic told Sky News host Cory Bernardi. “It felt like everybody was for it except that nobody actually was. “It was, I think, ultimately our Brexit moment and from that point onwards, I think, mainstream Aussies now know that … it wasn’t racist to vote ‘no’.”

Une vénérable demeure abritant deux chambres… la Chambre des Députés et le Sénat, une institution et un lieu regorgeant de trésors artistiques faisant notre patrimoine. A l’origine, le Sénat nous vient du palais du conseil souverain du Brabant qui remonte au 18ème siècle, à l’époque où la Belgique était autrichienne. Sous le régime hollandais, il devient le siège des Etats Généraux des Pays-Bas. Au milieu du 19ème siècle, la Belgique est indépendante et l’architecte Tilman-François Suys se voir confier la réalisation d’un deuxième hémicycle destiné au Sénat. Très prisé à l’époque, on doit également à Suys des interventions au palais royal de Bruxelles, au Jardin Botanique ou sur la place royale. Il s’agit de souligner à l’époque le système politique bicaméral belge en donnant un contrepoids conservateur à la Chambre des Représentants. N’importe qui ne pouvait pas être sénateur. Une espèce de chambre des Lords à la belge. Il fallait donc concevoir un écrin à la hauteur de la mission du lieu. L’hémicycle du Sénat est assurément le lieu le plus solennel de ce palais de la nation. Il y règne une atmosphère particulière avec des personnages qui ont marqué l’histoire de notre pays et qui veillent sur les débats à l’instar de Charlemagne, Godefroid de Bouillon, Philippe le Bon, Charles Quint, l’impératrice Marie-Thérèse ou encore Charles de Lorraine. Les couloirs, les salles de commission, les bureaux et l’hémicycle du Sénat comprennent de nombreuses œuvres d’art. A l’époque, les tableaux patriotiques sont à la mode et les paysages exaltent la beauté de notre pays. Mais il est aussi important d’y dresser un véritable panthéon des personnalités belges. La politique d’acquisition se poursuit au point de faire de ce lieu un musée extraordinaire et méconnu. Le Sénat d’aujourd’hui a beaucoup changé, mais si ses murs pouvaient parler, ils nous raconteraient des pans entiers de notre histoire. Une histoire qui s’est longtemps écrite au masculin mais qui témoigne aussi de la lente ouverture du monde politique aux femmes. En 2021, le Sénat se souvient qu’il y a cent ans, le royaume comptait sa première femme sénatrice. Marie Janson, mère de PH Spaak et grand-mère d’Antoinette Spaak.
