Plans to acquire Drax Hall Plantation on pause

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has announced Barbados is putting on pause plans to acquire lands at the Drax Hall Plantation in St. George. The announcement was made in a video address. The plantation is owned by British MP Richard Drax, whose family played a major role in development of sugar and slavery across the region. Drax in recent times has faced numerous calls to pay reparations to Barbados. Barbados was seeking to purchase some 50 acres of land for low and lower-middle-income housing. Ms. Mottley says she understands the concerns of many Barbadians who may feel they have been robbed of the opportunity of having an appropriate settlement for the reparations that ought to be made as a result of the blood, sweat and tears of Barbadians over the centuries. Prime Minister Mottley says Barbados is a country governed by the rule of law.
