WASCO informs the public that while our technical teams successfully completed the repair of three major leak areas on the 24-inch raw water pipeline at Millet yesterday evening, the restoration process has been delayed by new developments on the line.
Following the completion of those primary repairs, a gradual reopening of the network was initiated to begin supplying the system. However, during this process, two additional ruptures occurred at different locations. Technical assessments confirm that these new failures are a direct result of the fragile condition of the aging pipeline, which was unable to withstand the pressure of the initial recharge.
Repair teams were dispatched at daybreak and are currently on-site working to resolve these two new leaks. We anticipate that these repairs will be completed later today. Immediately following, an even more gradual reopening of the line will be initiated to move water to the Theobalds Treatment Plant while minimizing further stress on the infrastructure.
Provided these repairs stay on schedule, the public can expect the restoration of supply to begin this evening. Customers are reminded that the system will require time to stabilize; supply will be restored to those at lower elevations first, while those at higher elevations and at the extreme ends of the network will receive water later as the system achieves full pressure levels.
Saint Lucia has reached a critical juncture where conservation methods must not only be adopted, but also practiced consistently. In the coming weeks and months, WASCO anticipates further reductions in water pressure due to the ongoing dry season, compounded by recurring issues with our aging pipeline infrastructure. Conditions will worsen before meaningful improvements can be achieved.
The ongoing dry season has intensified the already low water pressures, and each of us must take personal responsibility by ensuring at least one full week of stored water to safeguard against these challenges.
WASCO regrets the extended disruption to supply across many communities on the Northern Distribution Network.
