Fourteen minor surgeries were performed at the Scarborough General Hospital as the Caribbean College of Surgeons gathered in Tobago for the 24th Annual Scientific Conference.

The conference got off to a busy start, with surgeons participating in clinical activities before gathering for the opening ceremony at the Mt Irvine Beach Bar on Thursday evening.

President of the College, Dr Charles Greenidge, praised the surgeons for what he described as remarkable work.

« I think we were all a bit jealous of the high level of professionalism, especially with Dr Carol Solomon, I mean, everything went like clockwork. The procedures went very smoothly. We actually did 14 procedures, which generally I think would probably take at least two days, and it happened in record time. »

The surgeries ranged from varicose vein treatment to radio-frequency ablations for chronic diabetic wounds.

THA Secretary of Health and Wellness, Dr Faith Brebnor, noted that while the surgeries may seem like just a component of the scientific conference, they are a major accomplishment for the Tobagonian patients.

« There are simple little things that can change people’s lives, and what you did yesterday for those 14 clients have changed lives. »

She noted that the surgeons are being hosted in partnership with the Tobago Regional Health Authority, allowing doctors in Tobago to gain new knowledge and skills.

« Let me also add because we were just having conversations in the corner, that we are going to continue calling on the college. We are going to continue ensuring that whenever we need help on a technical capacity, that you are the first call to ensure we continue this partnership. »

At the opening ceremony, the surgeons were treated to a bonfire on the beach, accompanied by a healthy dose of Tobago’s culture in limbo dancing, pan and other musical acts.
