More than 200 students in the Barataria/San Juan constituency will be assisted with back-to-school preparations courtesy of their Member of Parliament, Saddam Hosein.
Students will receive school supplies and books ahead of the 2026/2027 academic year.
On Friday, 15 special students were the first recipients. MP Hosein said these students represent only a small portion of the wider scope of the initiative.
« Over the next few weeks, we will have children coming in collecting their back-to-school drive. But these 15 that we have here today are very special because we have asked the parents to submit the book lists, and we have been able to fulfil that promise that we have made and every single child who is here, we have been able to fill that complete book list for the next academic year. »
The initiative is rooted in the MP’s own experience growing up in financially challenging circumstances.
He urged the young people to work hard, aim high and pursue their ambitions, reminding them that success is not limited to students who attend prestigious schools.
« There are students who are now ministers, judges, whatever profession, doctors and so on, who did not come out from these prestigious or what we call ‘prestige’ schools. They came from all of the other schools, the government schools and so on. So I implore all of the children, please aim for the stars, excel, make my constituency very proud because one day, I might be the one having to put my finger in red ink to vote for you all as a Member of Parliament for Barataria/San Juan and also seeing you as a Minister of Government, maybe the Prime Minister, President. »
Over the next few weeks, more young people will receive their back-to-school packages.
