Too often, we celebrate those already in the spotlight while overlooking the everyday individuals quietly making a difference across Trinidad and Tobago without seeking recognition.

To honour these quiet changemakers, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) has launched its 2026 Unsung Heroes Programme to celebrate their invaluable contributions.

Managing Director Mahadeo Sebarath noted the growing impact of the Unsung Heroes Programme, with 39 entries and 12 honourees recorded last year.

He added that with the prize money doubled in 2026, more communities stand to benefit from real and meaningful change.

« As a bank, we understand that strong communities are the foundation of a strong nation. We do believe economic progress and social progress go hand in hand. Hence the purpose of the Unsung programme highlights and rewards causes of Caribbean men and women working in their communities and making a difference in the lives of many. »

The programme aims to improve quality of life across communities.

For those wishing to nominate someone for the Unsung Heroes Programme, a CIBC representative outlined several key criteria, including outstanding community work, involvement in social programmes, mentorship, and acts of heroism or bravery within the past 12 months.

« So Unsung Hero is open to all Trinidad and Tobagonians age 10-plus. The award is open to individuals only. Work should be strictly voluntary, nominees should not be working on behalf of any political or business entities, nominees should not have been previously publicly awarded for their work, and nominees should be of good character with no recent, within about five years, criminal record. »

The programme was officially relaunched in 2025 after a 10-year hiatus.

The 2026 Regional Unsung Hero will receive US$10,000, the first runner-up US$7,000, and the second runner-up US$5,000.
