The Galleons Passage is leaving Trinidad and Tobago tonight to take aid to Venezuela.

The South American country continues to reel after twin earthquakes on June 24th left parts of the country in ruins.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, speaking after the 51st CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in St Lucia on Wednesday, said one of the ferries used for the inter-island route will be sent to Venezuela filled with aid parcels.

The 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes, which struck seconds apart, hit near the northern coast of Venezuela, particularly affecting areas west of Caracas.

« Immediately when those things happened many of us in the region were holding meetings. While it was happening we had Heads meetings and taking place and sending personnel. So instantly we addressed the really human woes based on the earthquakes, not even just one. Thereafter we worked in the region for sending supplies, relief supplies, relief personnel to Venezuela. Indeed tonight, when I go home, we’ll be sending off an entire ferry, the Galleons Passage going off to Venezuela loaded with supplies for the people of Venezuela. »

Mrs Persad-Bissessar revealed that regional leaders were speaking up until 2am on Wednesday discussing the issue. She praised the region for stepping up to assist the people of Venezuela during this time.
