Government To Maintain Crime-Fighting Strategy Beyond State Of Emergency
With the nationwide State of Emergency set to end on September 17th, Homeland Security Minister, Roger Alexander, is assuring citizens that Government has a broader strategy in place to tackle crime beyond the emergency measures.
Minister of Homeland Security, Roger Alexander, says law enforcement visibility will remain central to Government’s crime-fighting efforts after the State of Emergency expires later this month.
« You will see more police in your face. You’ll see more police, you can relate to police officers and members of the Defence Force. It is not always about enforcement, enforcement but also they are used to de-escalate things that are happening in a neighbourhood before it reaches the point of where we have to investigate a crime. »
Minister Alexander added that mobile police units will also play a key role in maintaining a strong security presence across the country.
« You notice that we have the mobile units located in different areas. That’s a project we intend to launch very soon. We already have three in Tobago and then we have three in Trinidad. One at the Eddie Hart ground, one at Grand Bazaar and one at Tarouba Flyover. »
He said Government is also pressing ahead with plans to expand mobile police units, with additional facilities to be strategically deployed throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
« We also have another 24 that we must put in different locations around Trinidad and Tobago. Very strategic and we want that so that persons could see. Now it’s not just about persons responding, law enforcement presence and visibility, which is good. We also want people to be able to communicate with the officer. »
Minister Alexander made the comments while speaking on TTT’s FOCUS programme on Saturday.
