In early September, Terrence Drew, prime minister of St. Kitts and Nevis 🇰🇳was hospitalized in Martinique.
He was admitted to the intensive care unit at La Meynard. Doctors confirmed that he had suffered a mild stroke. The good news was that he would make a full recovery.
No one in St. Kitts and Nevis knew of his whereabouts. Local media informed the population that the prime minister had been flown to an undisclosed location after feeling unwell.
But we knew and we published a news story on our website which was shared by media outlets in the Caribbean. In St. Kitts and Nevis the population finally discovered what had happened to the Prime minister, that he was alive and being taken care of.
Terrence Drew remained in Martinique for 24 hours before travelling to Miami for further health checks.
There he recorded a video that was broadcast on state media, confirming what had happened, that he was doing well and that he would take some time to convalesce.
Had we not broken the story, would anyone in St. Kitts and Nevis ever have known what had happened to Prime minister Terrence Drew ?
Caribbean leaders have no obligation to inform their people when they are absent for health reasons.
A St. Lucian prime minister won an election knowing that his cancer was in an advanced stage. He died in office.
The question is : Do Caribbean people deserve to know when the leaders they elected are sick and unable perform their duties ?
One month after his stroke, Terrence Drew is still in Miami. The country is being run by his deputy.
