New TTPS Grid Patrol System Set To Transform Policing In Tobago
Policing in Tobago is expected to improve with the launch of the TTPS Active Directed Grid Patrol initiative.
The initiative seeks to utilise technology and various monitoring systems in a real-time database that can be accessed by police officers at any time.
Already operational in Trinidad, Friday’s launch in Tobago was welcomed by Tobago Assistant Commissioner of Police, Rishi Singh.
« Today’s launch marks a realignment of systems and resources which include, but are not limited to, technological systems, inter-institutional networks, physical infrastructure, the legal framework and, most importantly, people. »
Present for the launch, Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro stated this system will merge the efforts of the Tobago Division with E-999 units, CCTV systems and traffic control.
« This is not an isolated measure, as it is part of a deliberate and structured direction that began with the placement of the National Operations Centre under the management of the TTPS. »
Commissioner Guevarro explained that it is not just about detecting and solving crime but also serving citizens. This was exemplified earlier in the week during the maxi taxi strike.
« We deployed resources to ensure public safety was maintained. That is the standard we are setting, and it is a service that is proactive, compassionate and unwavering in our duty to the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. »
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, while at times critical of the TTPS, is looking forward to the initiative being implemented in Tobago.
« I am heartened to hear from the Commissioner of Police this morning that this system will allow for effortless integration and will allow for the officers on the ground in Tobago to have access to data in real time without having to call someone in Port of Spain to get that access. »
He is hopeful that officers will be better informed in the execution of their duties.
« But it is their professionalism, courage, commitment, along with community support, that will ultimately determine its success. »
The Chief Secretary also pledged to fund services required by the TTPS, an opportunity Commissioner Guevarro is eager to explore following further discussions.
