Parliament Approves Three-Month Extension Of State Of Emergency
2 hours ago
Parliament has approved a three-month extension of the State of Emergency (SoE) following an intense debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, with the motion officially passed in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The motion, brought by Attorney General John Jeremie SC, passed with 28 votes in favour and 12 against, following debate in the House of Representatives.
Under the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, any further extensions beyond this latest period will require a higher threshold of approval—namely, a three-fifths special majority vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
