JMDA Calls On Minister To Retract Statement | TVJ News
The Jamaica Medical Doctors’ Association, JMDA, is calling for Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton to retract what it describes as a misleading statement about last month’s protest by medical interns.
In a media release, the association says the minister incorrectly claimed that interns at the University Hospital of the West Indies protested over a shortage of bed space for patients.
The JMDA insists the June 24 protest was instead sparked by concerns over gruelling work schedules, with some interns working shifts exceeding 48 consecutive hours, and the lack of adequate rest facilities after those shifts.
The JMDA said it is disheartening to realise that the minister is unable to identify the inhumane conditions under which doctors must function, the dissatisfaction among the interns, and what the doctors have to present to the country as healthcare.
