Felicity came alive on Monday as devotees marked the start of Ganesh Utsav 2026 with a colourful parade and the installation of Lord Ganesh’s murti.
President of the Felicity Ganesh Utsav Festivals Committee, Ganesh Ragoonanan, gave a brief breakdown of the festivities, sharing that the organisation has been observing the festival for the past 19 years.
« Today is the actual first day of the Ganesh Utsav celebrations. It’s the birth of Lord Ganesh, which millions of devotees all over the world celebrate this festival. Lord Ganesh is the remover of obstacles and giver of new beginnings and intelligence. »
Before the procession begins, a puja is conducted.
According to Mr Ragoonanan, the opening of the murti’s eyes marks an important moment in the ceremony. As the murti is carried in procession through the streets of Felicity, villagers come out to pay their respects, with blessings bestowed upon the community.
This is followed by the consecration of Lord Ganesh, where devotees present their offerings.
The murti is made from clay, straw and bamboo. The craftsman behind the murti, Daniram Sankar, says the creative process is a form of devotion.
Mr Ragoonanan is encouraging devotees to come out and take part in the celebrations.
« I would like to extend an invitation to the country to come and join with us, the Felicity Ganesh Utsav Festivals Committee, in Maha Ganapati Utsav celebration 2026. This is the largest locally made murti in Trinidad right now, I can assure you that. »
The 11-day celebration will end on September 25th and features prayers, devotion, worship and offerings.
