C’est à l’amiral de Coligny que l’on doit cette extraordinaire aventure. Depuis sa découverte en 1500 par les Portugais, le Brésil fascine. Les marins normands s’y livrent au commerce du bois et à la course contre les Portugais. Ils considèrent cette terre comme leur chasse gardée et le roi les soutient. Vers le milieu du siècle, Coligny met sur pied un véritable projet colonial avant l’heure. Chef du parti protestant quand éclatera la guerre civile (1562), tué à la Saint Barthélémy dix ans plus tard, il entend pour lors concurrencer les puissances ibériques en profitant des liens tissés avec les Indiens par les marins normands. Le 15 novembre 1555, 600 Français s’installent sur un îlot à l’entrée de la baie de Guanabara. Ils cultivent de bonnes relations avec les Indiens Tupinamba, au point que certains « truchements » s’installent dans leurs villages et adoptent leurs mœurs cannibales ; ils serviront d’intermédiaires aux Français. Mais la petite colonie vacille dès l’origine. Villegagnon ne supporte pas la nudité des Indiennes et la « paillardise » de ses hommes qu’il tente de remettre dans le droit chemin par des méthodes musclées. Ce chevalier de Malte est certes catholique mais il admire Luther et compte parmi ses amis Calvin, avec qui il a étudié le droit à Orléans. C’est d’ailleurs à ce dernier, réfugié à Genève, qu’il finit par demander le renfort d’hommes plus vertueux pour peupler sa colonie : Calvin lui envoie quatorze protestants, parmi lesquels Jean de Léry, un cordonnier de 22 ans originaire de Bourgogne. Débarqué le 7 mars 1556 au Fort Coligny, il y restera dix mois qui lui donneront la matière de son maître-livre publié vingt ans plus tard. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ???? Siakam, a two-time all-star and one of the last remaining ties to Toronto’s 2019 NBA championship team, was dealt to the Indiana Pacers in a blockbuster trade Wednesday. The Raptors received guard Bruce Brown, forward Jordan Nwora and three first-round picks from the Pacers in return. Toronto also got guard Kira Lewis from New Orleans, with a second-round pick going from the Pacers to the Pelicans in the deal. “My team has gone into every single detail on how we measure him staying or us doing this deal. And faith comes into it. And when we think of it, we think strategically,” Ujiri said. “You never know how this market changes.
