Minister of Education Dr Michael Dowlath is encouraging young people to use their talents and achievements in service of others.

Speaking at the Dayanand Memorial Vedic School Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday, he urged students not to view their academic accomplishments as personal achievements alone.

He told graduates that the knowledge, skills and confidence they have developed should be used to support classmates, friends and their wider communities as they progress through life.

« Your academic successes, your artistic talents, your discipline and determination are not badges to be worn with pride alone. They are also responsibilities. As you rise towards the future, never believe that your success is yours to keep only for yourself. The world needs young people who are willing to share what they know, to lift others as they climb. »

The Minister said students should carry forward the values instilled at the school, including generosity, compassion and service.

He stressed that some of life’s greatest contributions come not through awards or titles, but through helping others succeed and choosing cooperation over competition.

« Remember that knowledge grows when it is shared, wisdom multiplies when it is given away. As you move into new schools and new environments, I encourage you to become ambassadors of the values that have been nurtured here at Dayanand Memorial Vedic School. »

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Health, Councillor for Debe South Khemraj Seecharan encouraged the students to become the best versions of themselves.

« Many persons believe that being the most talented, being the most successful, the fastest, the smartest is how you become the best version of yourselves. And the truth is, that’s not true. Becoming the best version of yourselves is doing a little bit more and growing each and every day. So, wherever you start off today doesn’t determine where you’re going to end up. »

Mr Seecharan also encouraged the students to not be afraid of failure, as it is simply another opportunity to learn and grow.
