Following a court ruling, jet ski operators under the Tobago Water and Trails Association say they are ready and willing to comply with safety measures.

The Association was one of several defendants named in an injunction brought by the Tobago House of Assembly to regulate jet ski operations within the Buccoo Reef Marine Park following an accident which resulted in the death of a seven-year-old child in April.

According to the President of the Tobago Water and Trails Association, Ricardo Alfred, court orders for jet skis to stay 100 metres away from designated bathing areas, operate at no more than five miles per hour near shorelines, and restrict operations within the Nylon Pool are considered « fair. »

« To me, I found it to be very fair, as it relates to a balance between what the THA wants and what the operators want. »

The Association is pleased that the court is allowing them to continue operations. However, Mr. Alfred told TTT News he is working with his members to improve operations.

« We would have had some brief conversations with them. We are going to be doing some more work with the guys, so they have their jet ski licence. All of them have contracts now in terms of having persons sign up their contact information and some little information as well so that we would know exactly the data from each person that rents a jet ski. »

One of the orders issued by the court prohibits jet ski operators from soliciting services from beach goers.

Mr. Alfred stated that they are already working closely with the Tobago Hotel and Tourism Association (THTA) to promote their services in alternative ways.

« We have to work in harmony with them in terms of building out a very good product. »

While jet ski operators are eager to get back on the water, Mr. Alfred warned that penalties will be imposed on members who fail to comply with the court’s orders.

« Internally, we have some strong measures for the owners that we will be embarking. If we have to go through some judicial issues, we will be going through that as well, so we have some very strong fees and some very strong fines, and persons would be debarred from operating if they are found to be rogue. »

In the meantime, more markers around bathing areas will be placed to ensure jet ski operators are aware of areas to avoid.

Mr. Alfred said the aim is to ensure that the safety of the public is not compromised.
