A spirit of unity, culture and celebration filled Tabaquite on Tuesday, as residents joined Member of Parliament Sean Sobers for a special Divali observance.

The event attracted scores of constituents for an evening of reflection, entertainment and traditional festivities.

MP Sobers described Divali as a celebration that transcends religious and cultural boundaries, uniting people across Trinidad and Tobago in observance of the triumph of light over darkness.

« It doesn’t matter what religious organisation or belief that you may harbour; everyone in Trinidad and Tobago definitely comes out and they celebrate Divali. They understand the meaning of Divali, the triumph of light over darkness and the return of Shri Ram to Ayodhya, and this is being celebrated here by all cross sections of persons within the constituency and really demonstrates what a real Trinidad and Tobago society looks like. »

MP Sobers said he was encouraged by the overwhelming response, noting that the venue was filled to capacity.

« We have a spill over of so many persons outside within the car park section; well over two hundred people here this evening joining us, not only from the community of Tabaquite but throughout the constituency of Tabaquite itself, which really warms my heart that we have so many people coming out to celebrate this special occasion with us here. »

Meanwhile, Councillor for Carapo/Mamoral John Lezama said the spiritual discourse delivered during the event left a lasting impression on him and highlighted the strong sense of community in Tabaquite.

« What stood out for me tonight is the discourse that Baba Ji did and the message that he bring at the end of the session. When we look at the people that turned out here tonight, we didn’t expected that turnout. Although Tabaquite is a mixed community, it was well attended. We didn’t expect that the crowd is over three hundred people and it just shows that what community spirit has in Tabaquite. »

The evening featured cultural performances, live music, tassa drumming and the lighting of traditional deeyas, as residents joined in celebrating the Festival of Lights.
