Mathematics can often be challenging for students, but the Williams Educational Advancement Foundation is hoping to change the way they view the subject through its ‘Maths Up, Max Up’ competition.
The new national competition uses a fun and competitive format to make maths more engaging and encourage stronger performance among primary and secondary school students.
Project Lead and Director of the Foundation, Adana Leopold-Williams, said the national competition is designed to make maths engaging, interactive and fun for students across the country.
« Our team found it fit to create a competition such as this, a Jeopardy-style one, so that students would be able to become not just competitive but in love with maths to see maths as fun-loving and to want to be more successful at the subject. »
She explained that the competition, which is being conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, was developed in response to persistent concerns about students’ performance.
« The reason why we found this very important competition to do this competition was because we see the immense challenges that children are having at mathematics, which are shown in the results of the SEA and CSEC examination. »
Beyond the competition, she said the initiative aims to instil lifelong skills in young participants.
« Competitions are not just for the persons that win the competition, but competitions, you know, exude positive energy into our children to become more successful, to be go-getters, to be more hard-working, to persevere and to be dedicated in their lives. »
With participation spanning all seven educational districts, Mrs Leopold-Williams is confident that the competition will continue to build momentum in the coming years.
