Dane Skeete is the leading choice to take the British Caribbean Insurance Company (BCIC) Rally Barbados which started this evening at Bushy Park and concludes on Sunday. His Subaru Impreza WRC 06 has won the event in the hands of both him and his father Roger “The Sheriff” Skeete a total of five times and young Skeete is seeking to make it number six. The only things keeping him from winning the event are reliability of the car, or a massive shock from one of the R5 cars. As a member of the International Labour Organisation, Barbados is a signatory to dozens of conventions aimed at protecting workers' rights. Mindful of this, Chief Labour Officer Claudette Hope-Greenidge is challenging citizens to avail themselves of the conventions and legislation. She provided insight into a number of the signed conventions during a panel discussion on the fundamental human and workers' rights of the LGBTQI plus community. Among those dissected were the freedom of association and protection of the right to organise; equal remuneration and minimum age conventions. Ms. Hope-Greenidge says the violence and harassment convention ratified by Barbados in 2002 is the first international treaty that recognises the right of everyone to a world of work free from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence. She says an unwillingness to communicate freely and fairly is creating barriers in the workplace. Students from nine primary schools will get the opportunity to showcase their skills in coding and robotics. This is because the Barbados Light and Power has partnered with the Ministry of Education to launch its inaugural Battle of the Bots competition. The competition includes students from Blackman & Gollop, Arthur Smith, Christ Church Girls, St. Christopher, St. Lawrence, Ellerton, Sharon, West Terrace and Milton Lynch Primary Schools. The showcase is set to highlight skills learnt over the last three years, and culminates on July 1 at the Wildey Gymnasium. Chief Education Officer Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw underscored the importance of students utilising technology, as early as at the nursery school level, in an ever-evolving world. Already, over 300 teachers have been taught in coding and robotics using the VEX GO robotics kits. Additionally, BL&P's Managing Director Roger Blackman says coding and robotics will result in the creation of new teaching methods, curricula, and hands-on experiences that engage students. He adds he was excited to partner with the Ministry when he was approached about the competition, as he too has an interest in robotics, and looks forward to future installations.
