Many countries have set green targets to move from petrol to electric cars but the change could see a dramatic increase in mining. That is because lithium is essential in the production of electric car batteries and a key metal in the manufacturing process. Environmentalists and native people cannot agree on whether a new rush for the so-called "white gold" should be supported or fiercely opposed. The world's largest shipping group, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has announced it is diverting its ships away from the Red Sea because of increased threat of attacks. French company CMA CGM took a similar step a day after Danish shipping giant Maersk and German transport company Hapag-Lloyd suspended Red Sea journeys. The Red Sea is one the world's most important routes for oil and fuel shipments. The decision comes after attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The US said on Saturday its guided-missile destroyers had shot down 14 Houthi drones in the Red Sea. EU leaders have said that Ukraine will not be left without support, after Hungary blocked €50bn (£43bn) in aid. Ukraine is critically dependent on EU and US funding as it continues to fight occupying Russian forces. A $61bn defence aid package from the US has also been delayed because of major disagreements between Democrat and Republican lawmakers. Long delays in financial aid for the country would cause big problems for Ukraine's budget, economists have warned - while Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Hungary for blocking the EU aid package. Some British Army members who say they tried to vouch for Afghan special forces, were never contacted by the Ministry of Defence, an investigation by BBC Newsnight has found. Multiple sources have told the BBC that some people who offered to give Afghan soldiers references never heard back, and those troops are now in danger of being sent back to the Taliban. Many of the soldiers were subsequently denied help by a scheme designed to settle those in danger in the UK. About 200 members of Afghan special forces, trained and funded by the UK, currently living in Pakistan face imminent deportation to Afghanistan. The men were told they did not fall under the UK's Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy (ARAP), which was designed to help those who served alongside the UK military.
