Labelled the "worst treatment disaster in the NHS", the infected blood scandal saw more than 30,000 people infected with HIV and Hepatitis C after being treated with contaminated blood products. The infected blood scandal was "not an accident" and its failures lie with "successive governments, the NHS, and blood services", a public inquiry has found.  More than 30,000 people were infected with HIV and hepatitis C from 1970 to 1991 after being given contaminated blood products and transfusions - about 3,000 of whom have since died. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has announced five days of mourning, following the death of the country’s president in a helicopter crash. Ebrahim Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and six other people, were killed when the helicopter they were travelling in crashed in a mountainous area of north-western Iran. Ayatollah Khamenei said he offered his condolences "to the dear people of Iran". Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber has been appointed to assume interim duties after the death of the president, and he will also work to prepare for a presidential election within 50 days - a period of time set out in Iran's constitution for replacing a president who dies in office. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange can bring a new appeal against extradition to the US, the UK High Court has ruled. In 2022, then-home secretary Priti Patel signed his extradition order, which would see Mr Assange sent to the US to stand trial for leaking military secrets. But, today’s decision means he will be able to challenge US assurances over how his prospective trial would be conducted and whether his right to free speech would be infringed. Mr Assange has resisted extradition from the UK for more than a decade, after his Wikileaks website published thousands of confidential US documents in 2010 and 2011, and he will now have a number of months to prepare his appeal. The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas’s leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar. He is also seeking the arrest warrants of Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh, Mohammed al-Masri, and Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant. Mr Khan said he has "reasonable grounds to believe" the men bear responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity. In the Hamas leaders' case, the alleged crimes begin "from at least 7 October 2023"; in the Israeli leaders' case, "from at least 8 October 2023". Israeli politicians have condemned the move, calling it “scandalous” and a “political disgrace”, while a senior Hamas official said the ICC seeking arrest warrants "equates the victim with the executioner". The findings of Sir Brian Langstaff official report into the infected blood scandal have been released. He confirms that the scandal "was not an accident" and there were a "catalogue of failures". His report says infections occurred because doctors, the blood services and successive government failed to put patients safety first.
