A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted again on Wednesday, spewing red-hot fountains of lava 50 metres into the air, triggering the evacuation of the popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa and the town of Grindavik. The fissure where the eruption is happening is still elongating, like a "curtain of fire" around 2 km long so far, Rikke Pedersen, leader of the Nordic Volcanological Centre at the University of Iceland said. The fiery spectacle underlines the challenges faced by the island nation of almost 400,000 people as scientists have warned that repeated eruptions are possible in Reykjanes for decades or even centuries. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa cast his ballot on Wednesday in national elections where opinion polls suggest his African National Congress (ANC) risks losing its parliamentary majority after 30 years in power. Ramaphosa voiced concern over reported incidents of interference with electoral officials. "When you interfere with the work of the [electoral commission], you are really interfering with our democracy," he said. The ANC has been tarnished by scandals and anger over a stagnant economy, record unemployment of around 33 per cent and rolling power cuts. Its vote share has declined in every election since its 2004 peak. If it fails to win a parliamentary majority, the ANC would likely have to make deals with smaller opposition parties to stay in power — uncharted territory for Africa's oldest liberation movement. In Cape Town, the importance of the election weighed on first-time voters. "It's my first time voting yes. And I'm feeling very excited but nervous, because this is my first time voting and yeah, it's a very big decision for our country," Puleletso Makhura said. A 62-year-old Black woman in Montreal says she was racially profiled by police when a traffic stop turned into “one of the most humiliating experiences” of her life. Charlene Hunte, a grandmother and retired health-care worker who runs a local food bank, says police stopped her at 8 a.m. on April 30 in the city’s Little Burgundy neighbourhood in the Sud-Ouest borough. She was on her way to serve her community from Union United Church, Quebec’s oldest Black church, where the food bank operates just a couple of blocks from where the incident took place. Hunte says Montreal police pulled her over because the tints on her vehicle windows were darker than allowed under the law. They told her they couldn’t see her through her side windows. She claims she’s had those tints on her car for five years without any issue. Dan Spector reports.
