As millions of South Africans go to the polls on Wednesday, more are going hungry every day. South Africa's many challenges - ranging from a high unemployment rate and poverty to the energy crisis and rising cost of living -- impact negatively on food security. They make foods expensive and inaccessible to many. So, SA Harvest is calling on South Africans to challenge leaders to prioritise food security. Political parties in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro say they're working well with the Independent Electoral Commission so far. But there's been a question of security being compromised, scanners not working, and voters being turned away. Ahead of the 29 May polls on Wednesday, Amnesty International SA is calling on South Africans to prioritise human rights when casting their vote. In support of this, the organisation has released its Human Rights Manifesto. It highlights 10 crucial issues that political parties and candidates must commit to to uphold the rights of South Africans. The manifesto has been sent to political parties and independent candidates, along with a request for them to sign a pledge to uphold these rights if elected. So far, four political parties and one independent candidate have signed the pledge. To date, nearly 10,000 citizens have taken this pledge, underscoring the critical role of the electorate in ensuring that human rights are prioritised in the upcoming elections. Africa Check has assessed how four opposition parties understand the country's most pressing issues ahead of polls on 29 May 2024. It did so by looking at the claims made by ActionSA, Build One South Africa, uMkhonto weSizwe and Congress of the People in their election manifestos.
