China has said that it reserves the right to file a suit with the World Trade Organization over new tariffs the EU plans to impose on Chinese imports of electric vehicles (EVs). Beijing has slammed the move as protectionist and has urged the bloc to correct its "wrong practices". The European Union announced on Wednesday (Jun 12) that it would slap higher tariffs of up to 38.1 per cent on Chinese electric vehicle imports. The EU found that China’s car manufacturing industry benefited heavily from “unfair state subsidies'” that hurt EV producers in Europe. However, Chinese EVs “compete very well on price and quality, even with the tariffs”, said Mr Kingsley Jones, chief investment officer at boutique investment advisory firm Jevons Global. He told CNA’s Asia First that market leader BYD, which was hit with the lowest amount of tariffs, would be able to cement its leading position. Latest findings by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) show more people volunteered and donated last year, compared to its last study in 2021. However, median volunteer hours fell to 9.5 hours, compared to 12 hours previously. The average amount donated fell by half to $100. Miss Ng Soek Mun, director of knowledge and insights at the NVPC, shared more about giving behaviour in Singapore.

Singapore's semiconductor industry is getting a boost, with a new $3-billion silicon wafer manufacturing facility. Opened by Germany's Siltronic, the factory will double its manufacturing footprint and create 600 jobs in areas like engineering, research and development. At the launch event, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat said this will drive breakthroughs in other areas like the green transition and better healthcare solutions. That is why Singapore is investing to grow the semiconductor ecosystem for existing industry partners, while supporting innovative ventures.

Yishun residents can expect a modern take on colonial-era architecture when the Build-To-Order flats in Chencharu launch this month. The development will comprise 1,270 units of two-room Flexi to five-room flats. The HDB is taking design inspiration from a century-old bungalow that sits on a hill at the site. The black and white bungalow will be a key feature that the community can use in a green space that will also boast playgrounds, fitness concepts and a therapeutic garden. There will also be a "bus-only corridor" in Chencharu. Claudia Lim reports.

Economists expect Singapore's manufacturing sector to perform worse than previously estimated, even as full-year growth was kept at 2.4%. That's according to a quarterly survey conducted by the Monetary Authority of Singapore of 26 analysts. The finance and insurance sector is expected to be the main driver of growth for this year, given higher fees and commissions earned. Meanwhile, inflation is expected to drop further to 2.8% for the full year. Along with core inflation coming in at 3%, it means the central bank isn't likely to ease monetary policy any time soon.
