The European Union announced on Wednesday (Jun 12) that it would slap higher tariffs of up to 38.1 per cent on Chinese electric vehicle imports. The EU found that China’s car manufacturing industry benefited heavily from “unfair state subsidies'” that hurt EV producers in Europe. However, Chinese EVs “compete very well on price and quality, even with the tariffs”, said Mr Kingsley Jones, chief investment officer at boutique investment advisory firm Jevons Global. He told CNA’s Asia First that market leader BYD, which was hit with the lowest amount of tariffs, would be able to cement its leading position.
