Japan could join the AUKUS security pact that was formed by Britain, the United States and Australia in 2021 to push back against China’s growing power in the Indo-Pacific region. The US and Japanese leaders will likely discuss the topic on Wednesday (Apr 10). Robert Patman, Professor of International Relations at New Zealand’s University of Otago, says Japan is seen as a “very attractive partner” and has a “considerable stake” in the international rules-based order.
